Scar Therapy

Scar therapy is a gentle manual therapy using direct hands on treatment techniques to the superficial tissues (skin and fascia). The techniques help damaged tissue associated with a scar and the surrounding areas. Scar therapy can be used to treat any soft tissue fibrosis (thickening) following surgery or trauma.

Scars can leave areas of numbness, sensitivity and itching. The scar itself can be painful, hard and create a pulling sensation and a lack of mobility from the  trauma site. Stimulation to the tissue and surrounding areas can help the scar feel more comfortable, free and create improved mobility. Clients often comment after a session that the area feels less tight, there may be less pulling and tissues feel softer.

More effects of Scar Therapy...

  • Release tension around the scar

Scar therapy can help to soften the scar itself and the tissue surrounding it. This can make the affected area feel more comfortable and is often reported as feeling ‘more like a part of your body’ afterwards. This can be effective on any age of scar. A scar treatment can help loosen and release tight scar tissue to reduce discomfort. Treatment can be beneficial on both new and old scar tissue.

Scar will be raised to start with and will then flatten over time, scar massage can help aid this process.

  • Emotional support

By using gentle therapeutic touch and with over 20 years experience as a therapist and having been a cancer patient, we can talk through any emotions or emotional releases as we work. The treatment can be a powerful way to assist recovery after a surgery or accident trauma both physically and emotionally.

  • Improving Tissue Mobility

By releasing tension and encouraging movement between the layers of skin, fascia and muscle, the client's range of movement will often improve. Scar tissue can stick or adhere to tissues around it and this is something that can be addressed with manual therapy.

  • Reducing colour and improve texture

By stimualting the tissue we can help to fade the scar, create a more even texture and improve the look and health of the scar. Muscles / Joints that are held or clamped during surgery will also be affected and this is something we can address.

  • Encourage the healing process

Scarwork is often recommended by surgeons and other healthcare professionals to promote optimum tissue healing post surgery. This can also help to reduce the chance of long term complications.

Scar discomfort may be caused by a range of issues, neural input, pain, a pulling sensation from the scar and a lack of mobility.

Scars can leave areas of numbness, itching and sensitivity especially where nerve endings have to regenerate.

  • Reduce pain and sensitivity

Therapeutic touch may reduce pain and help normalise sensitivity.

Trapped nerves and irritated scar tissue can be a factor for prolonged discomfort.
